Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these medications should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
