In a inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
