Department of Justice Joins Lawsuit to Stop the State of California's Congressional Map
Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
